A Woman died from falling from the 5th floor of the CID building

    0

A woman detained by the CID has died after falling from the 5th floor this morning.

Police say she committed suicide by jumping out of a fifth-floor toilet window.

46 year old Rajapaksa Mudiyanselage Apsara Menike Rajapaksa has died this way.

The incident took place at around 3.50 this morning. She is a resident of Sedagala Namal Uyana, Pannipitiya.

According to police, the woman was in the custody of the Special Investigation Division 01 of the CID.

Police Media Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa stated that the woman was arrested in connection with a CID investigation into a complaint lodged against her over a financial fraud of over Rs. 60 million. He further stated that this fraud has taken place by setting up a lending society and obtaining loans from banks and lending again through that credit society.

This is the first time in the history of the CID that a woman has died in this manner. The first such incident in the history of the CID was the arrest of A. V. Podiappuhamy in Ratnapura on April 15, 1966. He fell to his death from the fourth floor. Known as Dodampe Mudalali, he was arrested by the CID as a suspect in the 1966 anti-government military coup.

Police said the death was a suicide. But other opinions at the time suggested that he had been pushed from the 4th floor. Even today, there are differing views on the matter.

With that death comes a heated debate in society regarding the 4th floors and a social panic builds upon the 4th floors. It is also noteworthy that several persons who were in the custody of the CID since then have fallen to their deaths from the building where the CID is located.

“Taking loans from IMF is advantageous than loaning from countries” – Former deputy governor of CBSL

    0

The best option for the country to get out of the current economic abyss is to take a loan from the International Monetary Fund, said the former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka Dr. W. A. Wijewardene.

Mr. Wijewardene also said that the International Monetary Fund imposes economic conditions when granting loans, but also imposes political conditions when obtaining loans from other friendly countries.

The former Governor of the Central Bank also said that it is better for the country’s economy to be subject to economic conditions than to be subject to political conditions when obtaining loans.

Therefore, in addition to borrowing from friendly countries, borrowing from the International Monetary Fund is also economically advantageous, he said.

Mr. Wijewardene said that even if short-term loans were obtained from countries such as China for a period of three months, they would impose political conditions if the loans were extended further, which would be detrimental to the country.

Power cuts for two and a half hours daily

    0

The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has informed the Ministry of Power and Energy that there will be power cuts for at least two and a half hours a day in the future due to the current power crisis.

CEB has informed the Ministry of Power and Energy that such a power cut will occur due to the loss of 115 megawatts of power to the national grid from the deactivation of the Kelanitissa power plant and the restriction on the import of fuel and coal required for power generation.

A spokesman for the CEB said the plan was to cut off power to two and a half hours a day for about two and half hours daily during peak hours from 6 pm to 9 pm.

Meanwhile, the Ceylon Electricity Board will have to pay Rs. 90 billion for fuel borrowed from the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation. The spokesman added that if the fuel supply is not restored due to the non-payment of the loan, the power generation will be in further crisis.

He said the current shortage of dollars would restrict the import of coal and the Norochcholai coal power plant would be unable to generate power in the future.

Therefore, the country will have to face a severe power crisis in the future, he said.

Order to shut ‘Gateway to Hell’

    0

Turkmenistan’s president has ordered the extinguishing of the country’s “Gateway to Hell”, a fire that has been burning for decades in a huge desert gas crater.

Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov wants it put out for environmental and health reasons, as well as part of efforts to increase gas exports.

But Canadian explorer George Kourounis examined the crater’s depths in 2013 and discovered that no-one actually knows how it started.

According to local Turkmen geologists, the huge crater formed in the 1960s but was only lit in the 1980s.

Many believe it formed when a Soviet drilling operation went wrong in 1971.

In 2018, the president officially renamed it the Shining of Karakum.

“We are losing valuable natural resources for which we could get significant profits and use them for improving the well-being of our people,” the president said in televised remarks.

He instructed officials to “find a solution to extinguish the fire”.

There have been numerous attempts to end the fire, including in 2010 when Mr Berdymukhamedov also ordered experts to find a way to put out the flames.

The crater is one of Turkmenistan’s most popular tourist attractions.
