    Wannila Aththo’s view on ‘One country, One Law’

    Tribal leader Uruwarige Wannila Aththo has expressed his views before the Presidential Task Force on ‘One Country, One Law’.

    The Presidential Task Force on ‘One Country, One Law’ is currently conducting a public consultation focusing on the Uva Province.

    The Presidential Media Unit stated that the views of the Indigenous people were sought at the Indigenous Village in Mahiyanganaya on the 6th and that the Tribal Leader Uruwarige Wannila Aththo had given his views and suggestions to the Presidential Task Force on behalf of his community.

    He said he believed the President had the strength to establish “one country, one law” and wished him the best of luck in overcoming any obstacles.

    The program was launched on January 08 at the Badulla District Secretariat.

    Speaking to the Task Force, Ms. Hasheena said that she was married in accordance with Islamic law and that the Badulla Kathi had unjustly divorced her husband without any notice.

    Presidential Media Unit stated that she mentioned, because there is no one to talk to about the injustice done to Islamic women and no one cares about themselves, it is very important that the “One Country, One Law” program be implemented.

    Representatives of several generations who took the lead in the Uva Wellassa War of Independence and were deprived of land rights by the British rulers commented that the country’s land law was still not being fairly enforced and that their families who took the initiative to save the country from foreign invasions and consequently lost property and lives after independence and pointed out to the task force that no justice had been done so far.

    The rights of other people living in the country are not enjoyed by the Tamil people in the plantation areas and all parties should pay attention to this. Representatives of several plantation organizations have told the Task Force that the land issue is also a major issue facing the people in the plantation areas, the Presidential Media Unit said.

    Rajakeeya Panditha Galagodaaththe Gnanasara Thero, Chairman of the Presidential Task Force for “One Country, One Law”, and a group of members including Prof. Shanthinandana Wijesinghe, Senior Lecturer Sumedha Weerawardena, Attorneys at Law Sanjaya Marambe, Eranda Navaratne, Pani Wewala and Secretary of the Task Force Jeewanthi Senanayake attended the event.
