A Woman died from falling from the 5th floor of the CID building

A woman detained by the CID has died after falling from the 5th floor this morning.

Police say she committed suicide by jumping out of a fifth-floor toilet window.

46 year old Rajapaksa Mudiyanselage Apsara Menike Rajapaksa has died this way.

The incident took place at around 3.50 this morning. She is a resident of Sedagala Namal Uyana, Pannipitiya.

According to police, the woman was in the custody of the Special Investigation Division 01 of the CID.

Police Media Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa stated that the woman was arrested in connection with a CID investigation into a complaint lodged against her over a financial fraud of over Rs. 60 million. He further stated that this fraud has taken place by setting up a lending society and obtaining loans from banks and lending again through that credit society.

This is the first time in the history of the CID that a woman has died in this manner. The first such incident in the history of the CID was the arrest of A. V. Podiappuhamy in Ratnapura on April 15, 1966. He fell to his death from the fourth floor. Known as Dodampe Mudalali, he was arrested by the CID as a suspect in the 1966 anti-government military coup.

Police said the death was a suicide. But other opinions at the time suggested that he had been pushed from the 4th floor. Even today, there are differing views on the matter.

With that death comes a heated debate in society regarding the 4th floors and a social panic builds upon the 4th floors. It is also noteworthy that several persons who were in the custody of the CID since then have fallen to their deaths from the building where the CID is located.
