SriLankan Cares Leads Youth-Driven Mangrove Cleanup

SriLankan Cares, the CSR arm of SriLankan Airlines, partnered with the Forest Department, 100 local fishermen, and 40 school children in a large-scale mangrove conservation and cleanup effort at the Negombo Lagoon — one of South Asia’s richest coastal ecosystems.

The initiative aimed to raise awareness about the importance of mangroves in protecting coastlines and fighting climate change, especially as pollution continues to threaten areas in the Gampaha and Puttalam districts.

Highlighting the airline’s commitment to sustainability, SriLankan Airlines Head of Marketing, Saminda Perera, emphasized the value of community partnerships in protecting the island’s natural heritage and aligning with environmentally conscious travelers.

Students from three local schools actively participated, turning education into action by helping clean the lagoon and learning about the vital role mangroves play in sustaining both ecosystems and fishing livelihoods.

In addition, the Forest Department and SriLankan Cares conducted a survey of over 100 households to understand public perceptions of mangrove ecosystems — data that will help shape future conservation strategies.

As the national carrier, SriLankan Airlines aims to lead by example, combining community involvement, research, and strategic partnerships to support a more sustainable and biodiverse Sri Lanka.
