Power cuts for two and a half hours daily

The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has informed the Ministry of Power and Energy that there will be power cuts for at least two and a half hours a day in the future due to the current power crisis.

CEB has informed the Ministry of Power and Energy that such a power cut will occur due to the loss of 115 megawatts of power to the national grid from the deactivation of the Kelanitissa power plant and the restriction on the import of fuel and coal required for power generation.

A spokesman for the CEB said the plan was to cut off power to two and a half hours a day for about two and half hours daily during peak hours from 6 pm to 9 pm.

Meanwhile, the Ceylon Electricity Board will have to pay Rs. 90 billion for fuel borrowed from the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation. The spokesman added that if the fuel supply is not restored due to the non-payment of the loan, the power generation will be in further crisis.

He said the current shortage of dollars would restrict the import of coal and the Norochcholai coal power plant would be unable to generate power in the future.

Therefore, the country will have to face a severe power crisis in the future, he said.
