Dr. Lakshman Edirisinghe, Director, National Blood Transfusion Center, urges the public to refrain from visiting the Blood Transfusion Center if they have symptoms similar to covid disease or have been in close contact with an infected person or have visited a foreign country and returned to Sri Lanka within three months.
Dr. Lakshman Edirisinghe said that although there was no opinion that covid could be transmitted through blood or weak components, the request was made to prevent the spread of the virus from covid patients to hospital staff.
The National Blood Transfusion Center conducts tests on five infectious diseases during blood transfusions.
According to the test results to prevent covid-19 blood would not be taken from any person for more than a week after vaccination, no matter what vaccine was given; Mr. Edirisinghe said.
