A van providing security for transporting the dead body of a 79-year-old Muslim woman who died from covid 19 virus from Hatton to Ottamawadi in Batticaloa has toppled this morning (05) due to an accident.
A sub-inspector, a sergeant, two constables and two civilians were traveling with the driver of the van at the time of the accident, police spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said.
Van was scheduled to travel from Hatton to Batticaloa along Ginigathhena & Kandy. The accident took place near the 59th km post on the Hatton – Ginigathhena road, said Ajith Rohana.
Sub Inspector Bennett Kumarasinghe who was in the van was killed and others were injured in the accident, Ajith Rohana said. The injured have been admitted to Watawala Hospital.
The van was following the vehicle carrying the Covid body. Ajith Rohana also stated that further steps have been taken to take Covid body to the destination under the protection of other police officers.
