    Govt. introduces Rs.5000 relief package beneficial to people

    The Trade Ministry has introduced a relief package of essential food items valued Rs.5000 for people affected by travel restrictions imposed in view of the pandemic.

    Minister Bandula Gunawardane said the government would distribute it through a coordinated mechanism in the affected areas.

    The Cyclonic Storm ‘TAUKTAE” over south east Arabian sea is intensified into a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm and lay centered at 0230 a.m today, near latitude 14.7°N and longitude 72.7°E, a statement from the Disaster Management Centre(DMC) said. It is very likely to intensify further during next 12 hours. The system is likely to move nearly north-northwestwards and cross Gujarat coast India during May 18. The impact of this system, on weather over the island is expected to reduce gradually.

    157 dead due to Covid-19 during second week of May

    As many as 157 people died of Covid -19 during the second week of May, the health authorities confirmed. It is an increase over 83 cases reported the previous week of May.

    After the third wave broke out, fatalities have shot up in the country. So far, 941 people have died of the virus since the pandemic broke out last March.

    Covid vaccination to be extended beyond Western Province

    SL food products at leading supermarket in Oman

    Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Oman Ameer Ajwad opened an exclusive stall for “Sri Lankan products” at the prominent SPAR supermarket outlet at Madinat Al Sultan Qaboos in Oman together with the CEO of SPAR Oman Sridhar Moosapet, a statement from the Ministry said. Mrs. Ameer Ajwad, SPAR Divisional Manager for Retail & Services David Christudoss, and Category Manager Dharmvir also joined the Ambassador during the launch.

    The statement said the Sri Lankan Embassy in Oman recently initiated export of Sri Lankan food products to SPAR Supermarkets chain in Oman under the Economic Diplomacy programme of the Foreign Ministry in coordination with the Sri Lanka Exports Development Board (EDB). A 20 feet container of consolidated consignment of Sri Lankan food products consisting of Munchee products and Arya food products arrived in Oman recently under this initiative. The Embassy jointly with the EDB facilitated the export of these Sri Lankan food products to SPAR Oman, as a first phase, directly from Ceylon Biscuits Limited and Tradlanka Agricultural Enterprises (Pvt) Ltd.

    “This is the first exclusive stall of its kind for Sri Lankan products launched at a supermarket in Oman. Ambassador Ameer Ajwad extended his appreciation to the management of SPAR Oman for making this exclusive arrangement on his request. This stall also facilitates to exhibit new Sri Lankan products to the consumers. Arrangements will also be made to open such exclusive stalls at the other prominent SPAR supermarket outlets in Oman.

    SPAR Oman is a popular supermarket chain in Oman and the Company runs 75 stores across the Sultanate of Oman.

    Sri Lanka Embassy in Muscat under the Economic Diplomacy programme of the Foreign Ministry jointly with the EDB organized a B2B virtual meeting recently between SPAR Oman and 16 Sri Lanka’s prominent food and beverages sector companies with a view to promoting export of Sri Lankan products of food and beverages to the Sultanate of Oman,” the statement said.

    LPL to be conducted from July 30 to August 22

    Sri Lanka Cricket announced today that that the second edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) will be held from July 30 to August 22, 2021.

    ‘’We have found a suitable window to hold this year’s edition, whilst we are currently working on finalizing the other details of the tournament,’’ said Professor Arjuna De Silva, Chairman, Management Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket.

    The first edition of the LPL, which is Sri Lanka’s topmost domestic T20 league, with an international flavor, was initiated last year and was held at the MRICS, Hambantota, with the participation of 05 teams.

    600,000 Sputnik V vaccines to be brought in soon

    A stock of 600,000 Sputnik V vaccines will be delivered within the next couple of weeks, Minister Sudarshana Fernandopulle said.

    The United Arab Emirates will bar entry to non-UAE resident travellers from Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka starting on Wednesday to try to contain the spread of the coronavirus, Reuters reported today.

    The UAE last month banned entry to travellers from India to guard against the spread of the highly contagious Indian variant.“Flights between the four countries will continue to allow the transport of passengers from the UAE to Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka,” the Gulf state’s National Emergency Crisis and Disasters Management Authority (NCEMA) said.The ban includes transit flights coming from those countries. Transit flights to those countries can continue.UAE citizens, long-term residency holders – known as “golden visa” holders – and diplomats are not included in the ban, which comes just ahead of the Eid festival celebrating the end of the Islamic fasting month of Ramadan.

    To enter the UAE from the four countries, people must have been in another country for at least 14 days beforehand, NCEMA said. (Reuters)
