Country’s food reserve is only upto 3 months

Cabinet Spokesman, Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said today (29) that the country has an essential food reserve for three months but it is a challenge to maintain it with the current situation in the world.

He said there were 4.5 billion in existing reserves, but no red light had yet emerged.

He said the government was paying close attention to the condition of the reserves and was implementing a number of measures to address the existing issues.

He was speaking at a media briefing held at the Government Information Department today (29).

He was responding to a question by a journalist as to whether Sri Lanka currently has an essential food reserve.

The Minister said that in the current situation in the world, a number of major sources of income in Sri Lanka have been blocked and the food security program is being implemented in Sri Lanka.

However, the risk has not been ruled out and the government has taken up the challenge and is working on measures to prevent such a situation from escalating.
