Man who got arrested for roaming on road without a mask died

A Sub Inspector and a Sergeant of the Panadura North Police have been suspended in connection with the death of a man who was arrested under the quarantine law for staying on the road without a mask. Later he was admitted to a hospital due to injuries.

The deceased has been identified as a 48-year-old resident of the Wattalpola area in Keselwatta, Panadura, police spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said.

The police arrested the suspect yesterday (06) at around 9.00 am. He was injured when he jumped out of the moving car, opening the back door while being taken to the police station in a police vehicle, police said. The suspect was released on bail after being admitted to hospital and died at around 6.30 pm, police said.

Ajith Rohana said that the police officers who arrested and brought the suspect to the police station were suspended because it was found that the officers had not taken proper action regarding his security.

Ajith Rohana said that investigations are being carried out under the direction of a Superintendent of Police.
