Mr. Sajith Premadasa, the leader of the opposition, has made a revelation about an obstacle to the entry into active politics for former state minister and veteran artist Mr. Ranjan Ramanayake, who came out of Welikada prison with conditional pardon today.
Mr. Ramanayake has been pardoned under Article 34 (1) (d) of the Constitution saying that it is merely a mitigation of his sentence.
The opposition leader points out that he was disappointed to learn that Mr. Ramanayake has not received a full amnesty with his civic and political rights under 34 (2) of the Constitution.
“This means he is unfit to hold political office. Totally disappointed with it!” The opposition leader has announced on his social networks.
On January 12, 2021, he was sentenced to rigorous imprisonment by the Supreme Court for contempt of court.
