“If country is not stable within 2 weeks, I will resign” – Governor of CBSL

    • If the political issue is not resolved within 2 weeks I will resign.
    • If political stability is lost, no one including himself can rebuild this.
    • Do not buy anything except the essentials at this time.
    • I came in confident that country will be stable in 2 weeks and the rest of the work could be done.
    • The work that was done since a month ago is now going in another direction.
    • Political authorities must make the necessary decisions immediately.

The Governor of the Central Bank, Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe says that he has informed all political parties that he will resign if the current situation in the country continues for another two weeks.

He warned that no one including himself could not carry out the task of rebuilding the country if the political parties and other authorities did not work to build political stability in the country during that period.

He mentioned this speaking at a special news conference today.

The Governor said that he came to Sri Lanka in the hope that within two weeks would be stabilized and he would be able to implement the plans he had in mind to revive the economy.

He says it has been almost a month since he took over as the Governor of the Central Bank, but the country is still politically unstable, which poses a serious challenge to the Central Bank’s plans to revive the economy.

He said the process that started with that goal is now moving in a different direction.

The Governor of the Central Bank emphasized that he had already informed all the major political parties in the country, including the President, of the current serious situation and that it is their responsibility to unite and take the necessary decisions to rebuild the country.

He said that a number of difficult decisions had to be taken to restore the current economic situation in the country and what should be done by people’s representatives and the relevant authorities is to decide whether to hold an election and bring in a stable government or establish a stable government without an election.

The Governor of the Central Bank emphasized that although he could not give a direct answer as to whether an election should be held at this time, he only wanted a stable government that could take direct decisions and that it is now up to the people’s representatives to achieve that.

He also said that people should not spend money on buying any imported goods at this time. “If you want a TV, postpone it for a while. Use the money only to buy essentials, including fuel,” he said at a special media briefing today.
