    Russia warns the United States

    Russia has issued a special warning to the United States.

    Russia’s ambassador to the United States has warned that US military aid to Ukraine, including modern weapons, could escalate the conflict in Ukraine and cause more casualties.

    The ambassador made the warning in an interview with a Russian state television channel.

    “What America is doing is adding fuel to the fire. I see that this is exacerbating the situation.” He has stated.

    The ambassador informed the US government in writing of Russia’s views on the US supply of arms to Ukraine.

    However, he revealed in his interview that the US government has not yet responded to his letter.

    Meanwhile, US Secretary of State and Secretary of Defense visited Ukraine last Sunday.

    A husband killed his wife and jumped into a well trying to commit suicide

    A woman who came to Sri Lanka after working in New Zealand for three years has been stabbed to death by her husband.

    That was within two days of her arrival in the country.

    The husband had stabbed her sister and a friend several times at the time of the incident and they are currently in a critical condition receiving treatment at the Ragama Hospital, police said.

    The husband then slit his throat, jumped into a well and tried to commit suicide. He is currently receiving treatment at the Gampaha Hospital.

    The stabbing had taken place last night at a house in the Webada area in the Weliweriya Police Division.

    The deceased woman is 33 years old and the husband is 37 years old. Police say he was an employee of a motorcycle company.

    The deceased woman left for a job in New Zealand in 2019 shortly after her marriage. Investigations have revealed that a family dispute has arisen between the two as she has promised to bring her husband to New Zealand but has not fulfilled her promise. According to the police, the stabbing took place as the dispute escalated.

    Request for teachers and students to go to the nearest school has been dropped

    The Secretary to the Ministry of Education has rejected a request made by the Teachers and Principals Trade Union Alliance to provide an alternative solution to the problems faced by teachers and school children due to the shortage of fuel.

    The Teachers and Principals Union has requested the Secretary of Education to allow teachers and students to go to schools of their choice near their homes due to transportation difficulties.

    The All Ceylon Multi-Day Trawler Owners’ Association states that more than 5,000 multi-day trawlers used for fishing in international waters have been anchored off the coast.

    The union says that due to the increase in fuel prices, it has become impossible to launch their fishing vessels into the sea.

    The organization says they have earned US $ 380 million in the past year alone by capturing fish from international waters and exporting it to foreign countries.

    The All Ceylon Multi-Day Trawler Owners’ Association states that about 200,000 people who worked in multi-day trawlers and allied occupations have been affected due to anchoring these vessels in the harbours without going to sea.

    However, the Minister of Education Dr. Ramesh Pathirana has requested the teachers to engage in strike action so as not to hinder the education of the students.

    Leader of the All Ceylon People’s Congress Rishad Bathiudeen says that his party will support the 21st Amendment.

    He told a news conference that he would support the 21st Amendment as it is based on the 19th Amendment.

    During the 2022 IMF and World Bank Spring Meetings in Washington, D.C., IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva and other senior members of IMF management met with a Sri Lankan delegation, led by Finance Minister Ali Sabry and Central Bank of Sri Lanka Governor Nandalal Weerasinghe, and discussed policy actions to address economic challenges.

    The IMF team for Sri Lanka held initial technical discussions on an IMF-supported program with the delegation. Masahiro Nozaki, mission chief for Sri Lanka, issued the following statement today:

    “During April 18–22, the Sri Lankan delegation and the IMF team had fruitful technical discussions on the authorities’ request for an IMF-supported program.

    The discussions covered recent economic and financial developments in Sri Lanka, the need for implementing a credible and coherent strategy to restore macroeconomic stability, and the importance of stronger social safety nets to mitigate the adverse impact of the current economic crisis on the poor and vulnerable.

    The IMF team welcomed the authorities’ plan to engage in a collaborative dialogue with their creditors.

    “Going forward, the IMF team will support Sri Lanka’s efforts to overcome the current economic crisis by working closely with the authorities on their economic program, and by engaging with all other stakeholders in support of a timely resolution of the crisis.”

    An announcement about Lohan’s and Piyal’s state ministry portfolios

    Dhamma school examinations will be held tomorrow

    Chinese Premier Assures Support to Sri Lanka to Address Economic and Social Development

    During a phone conversation with Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, China’s Premier Li Keqiang assured China’s support to Sri Lanka to facilitate greater stability in economic and social development.

    “China feels for Sri Lanka for the difficulties and challenges you face, and we want to do our utmost to provide help to improve the peoples’ livelihoods in your country,” Premier Li said to Prime Minister Rajapaksa.

    The Chinese Premier also assured Prime Minister Rajapaksa that China will work with the Sri Lankan government to address some of the urgent financial issues that Sri Lanka is currently facing. Among other areas discussed during the phone conversation were the possibilities of fast-tracking negotiations on the free trade agreement, reducing Sri Lanka’s trade deficit with China and attracting more Chinese tourists when the situation permits.

    “We will continue to work together to advance and promote friendship and relationship between our two countries,” Premier Li said, “and we do feel for you for the difficulties you face at the moment, and we will also work together to address the difficulties.”

    Prime Minister Rajapaksa thanked the Chinese Government for the recently-announced humanitarian aid and the continued support and cooperation.

    Raw rice available at concessionary prices from Sathosa

    Sudu Kekulu, Nadu and Samba rice are being sold at concessionary prices by Lanka Sathosa branches, according to the Ministry of Trade.

    A kilo of raw Nadu and white raw rice sells for Rs. 145 and a kilo of samba sells for Rs. 175, Ministry of Trade states.

    Ministry also states that white Kekulu, Nadu and Samba which are imported from India will be provided at those concessionary prices.

    According to the Ministry of Trade, a maximum of 5 kg of rice can be obtained per person at a time.

    Depleted stock count of essential drugs and surgical materials exceed 5000

    The Government Pharmacists’ Association states that 525 stocks of medicines and 5376 surgical materials have been depleted in the Colombo Medical Supplies Division of the Ministry of Health.

    This is the first time that a large quantity of such drugs and surgical materials has been in short supply in the Main Medical Supplies Division of the Ministry of Health, said the Chairman of the Government Pharmacists’ Association, Ajith P. Tilakaratne.

    The supply division has stocks of 06 life-saving medicines, 239 essential medicines and 280 essential medicines, while the stock of 2721 essential surgical materials and 25 other surgical materials are out of stock, according to the Pharmacists’ Association.

    The association also said that stocks of medicines used for emergency heart attacks and rabies vaccines have also ran out.

    A sergeant arrested with heroin worth Rs. 10 million which is said to be received from a court

    A Police Sergeant in Gothatuwa Police has been arrested by the Police Narcotics Bureau with 750 grams of heroin worth nearly Rs. 10 million.

    A person was arrested with 45 grams of heroin in a raid carried out in Wellampitiya yesterday. Details of the sergeant have been revealed during a lengthly interrogation carried out on the suspect to find about how the drug is received. Police Narcotics Bureau then come out with a strategical plan and make the suspect telephone the sergeant and demand another consignment of heroin.

    Police sources said that the sergeant was arrested when he brought seven hundred and fifty grams of heroin.

    During the lengthy interrogation, the sergeant had stated that he had received the stock of heroin from a clerk in charge of the judical data warehouse in a court in Colombo. The Police Narcotics Bureau states that investigations are being carried out regarding the clerk.

    Here’s what will happen to the price of cement from next week

    Cement manufacturers and importers have decided to increase the price of a bag of cement by Rs. 400, according to the Sri Lanka National Constructions Association.

    Its chairman Susantha Liyanarachchi says the decision will be implemented within the next week.

    He also said that if the price of cement goes up, there is a risk of completely collapsing the construction industry in the country.

    At present a bag of cement sells for Rs. 2350 in the market.

    No increase in gas prices for now
