At least 111 people have died and more than 230 others have been injured in an earthquake in northwest China, the country’s media reported.
The reports also say that it has not yet been possible to calculate the number of missing people from the earthquake that hit China’s Gansu province last night.
The Chinese government says only 2,300 rescue workers, including personnel from local emergency management and fire departments, have been deployed.
Earlier, the US Geological Survey said an earthquake of magnitude 5.9 struck the area.
They had said that it caused a severe shock and that the economic damage could be greater and more widespread.
Chinese authorities said the quake was of high magnitude 6.2.
Rescue operations are still on.
