Mr. Janaka Dharmakirthi, Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Plantation Industries, has been appointed as the new Chairman of Milco Company Limited.
It is for the position left vacant by the resignation of the former chairman Mr. Renuka Perera.
The appointment has been made by Minister Mahinda Amaraweera.
Accordingly, in addition to the position of Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Plantation Industries, he will also perform his duties in this Chairman position.
Renuka Dushyantha Perera, who served as the chairman of Milco, had taken steps to resign from yesterday (18).
Mr. Renuka Perera said that he decided to resign as he felt it was futile to spend his time further on this institution as Milko was being merged with a local and Indian company as part of the government’s privatization measures.
For the past few weeks, Milco employees have been protesting demanding Renuka Perera to resign as chairman.
The employees alleged that Milco, which was making profits, turned loss-making during Renuka Perera’s tenure.
