    Veteran actor ‘Kalan’ has passed away

    The talented and veteran actor Mr. Amarasiri Kalansuriya has passed away.

    Mr. Kalansuriya was at his home when died and was 82 years old.

    Mr. Amarasiri Kalansuriya, popularly known as ‘Kalan,’ was a talented actor in Sri Lankan cinema, theater, and television.

    He made his first film appearance in the film ‘Hanthana Kathawa’ with Vijaya Kumaratunga.

    He won the ‘Wicharaka Award’ for his performance in the movie ‘Ahas Gauwa’ in 1974, won the ‘Sarasawiya Award’ for Best Supporting Actor in 1982, the ‘Sarasawiya Award’ for Best Supporting Actor in 1986, and the President’s Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1986 for the film ‘Pooja’.

    Mr. Kalansuriya has acted in many movies that have left a mark on Sri Lankan cinema.

    Mr. Kalansuriya has contributed to many creations like ‘Bambaru Awith’, ‘Ahas Gauwa’, ‘Yasa Isuru’, ‘Akkara Paha’, ‘Sinhabahu’, ‘Wajiraa’, ‘Ahas Maliga’, ‘Diyata Gindara’, ‘Tharanga’, ‘Apeksha’, ‘Anupama’, ‘Podi Malli’, ‘Kanchana’, ‘Pariththyagaya’, ‘Wajira’, ‘Sakwithi Suwaya’, ‘Yasa Isuru’, ‘Pooja’ etc.

    He played a lead role in ‘Dimuthu Muthu’, the first television series produced in Sri Lanka, directed by D. B. Nihalsinghe.

    As a theater actor, he produced and acted in Podi Wije dramas. After some break, Mr. Kalansuriya returned in 2001 with the film ‘Shilpa Denumana’ directed by Rodney Vidanapathirana.
