Police have arrested the person who had given alcohol to a child last evening (10) after conducting an investigation into a video shared on social media that allowed a child to drink alcohol and allow him to drink alcohol.
The suspect is a resident of Nuge Road, Peliyagoda, DIG Ajith Rohana said in a police statement. Police say that the 25-year-old suspect had given alcohol to a 4-year-old child. They say that the suspect is a distant relative of the child and it is suspected that he continuously allowed the child to drink alcohol.
Investigations have revealed that the father of the child has abandoned the mother of the child and that the mother is living with the child in a shanty and slum complex in Nuge Road. The suspect also lives in a house near the house where the child lives. On the 27th of last month, the young man was drinking a can of beer when he approached the child.
Police say that he had also videotaped the drinking.
Police investigations have revealed that on the same day, he had uploaded the video to the social network account of the alumni group of a school in Hekiththe where he was educated. Following the publication of the video, the police headquarters informed the police intelligence unit to investigate. Accordingly, the intelligence officers attached to the Peliyagoda Police have paid special attention to the accounts that shared this video on social media and the information about the account of the Past Pupils’ Association has been revealed. The suspect has been identified during the investigation. After informing the OIC of the Peliyagoda Police Headquarters, Chief Inspector Mahinda Willowaarachchi, a group including him had gone to Nuge Road and arrested the suspect.
It has also been revealed that the suspect is an employee of a leading construction company in Sri Lanka. According to the police, the suspect said that “The child had asked what he was drinking while he was drinking beer and had asked him to give him some as well. Accordingly, he gave his beer can to the child and videotaped it for fun and put it on Facebook”
The suspect is due to be produced in court today (11).
