    Member of Parliament Dallas Alahapperuma has sent a special letter to Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena.

    Fuel delivery to 12 filling stations is temporarily suspended

    The distribution of fuel has been temporarily stopped to 12 fuel stations that contributed the least to the current QR system in providing fuel.

    The Ministry of Power and Energy announced that they have observed how fuel stations have been working using the QR system in a progress review meeting with the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation’s trading division.

    Accordingly, they announced that they decided to temporarily stop the distribution of fuel to about 12 filling stations that have contributed the least to that system.

    It has also been told to provide the information received as public complaints to the relevant police stations and to carry out regulatory activities continuously.

    High Commissioner Moragoda interacts with African envoys concurrently accredited to Sri Lanka

    Continuing the series of engagements with concurrently accredited Diplomatic Missions to Sri Lanka from New Delhi, High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to India Milinda Moragoda interacted with a group of African Heads of Mission, and briefed them on the present developments in Sri Lanka. The interaction was also to increase Sri Lanka’s engagement with the states in the African continent, particularly in trade and economic spheres.   

    This group of Heads of Mission included two Ambassadors, two High Commissioners and five chargés d’ affaires who are concurrently accredited or designated to Sri Lanka from New Delhi. The second group of African Heads of Mission is to be hosted at the next interactive session. Ambassadors of Ethiopia and Mali along with the High Commissioners of Botswana and the Gambia as well as the chargés d’ affaires of Algeria, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Lesotho and Malawi attended this meeting.  

    High Commissioner Moragoda welcomed the invited Heads of Mission and expressed his keenness in further strengthening Sri Lanka’s relations with their respective countries, particularly in the trade and economic spheres. He also pledged all possible support of his Office to them in carrying out their duties.

    He briefed the Heads of Mission on the current economic and political developments in Sri Lanka, in particular the plans for the stabilization and recovery of the Sri Lankan economy. A detailed discussion followed, with the Heads of Mission posing several questions to High Commissioner Moragoda. The diplomatic staff of the High Commission of Sri Lanka also attended this interactive session.  

    This was the fifth time that High Commissioner Moragoda interacted with concurrently accredited Heads of Mission in this manner since assuming office in New Delhi. Previously, he had interacted with a group of European Heads of Mission and a group of Latin American and Caribbean Heads of Mission on 21 June and 19 July 2022, respectively.

    The High Commission of Sri Lanka in New Delhi functions as the main coordinating point between the concurrently accredited 94 Foreign Missions and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka.

    We also requested President Ranil Wickramasinghe to take steps to establish an interim government or an interim administration as soon as possible. Because this issue cannot be allowed to drag on any longer. The country is facing a dollar crisis. The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna will unconditionally support the President to solve the problems of the people.”

    A payment card is issued for buses running on the highway from Makumbura to Galle.

    It has been introduced today under the chairmanship of the Minister of Transport, Highways and Mass Media Dr. Bandula Gunawardena.

    The National Transport Commission (NTC) has launched this today (19) under the pilot project of using an electronic card instead of bus tickets under the ‘E-ticketing concept’.

    The Chairman of the National Transport Commission, Commander (Retired) Nilan Miranda said that this pilot project will be implemented on buses travelling from the Kottawa Makumbura Multipurpose Center to Galle along the Southern Expressway.

    The touch travel card system software is ready to be included in the pilot project, which will allow the authorities to test the system and detect errors.

    Water supply will be suspended for several areas in Colombo

    The navy and the police have succeeded in raiding two petrol and diesel smugglings last night (17).

    In this raid, 05 suspects were arrested and 1429 liters of petrol and 6600 liters of diesel were also taken into custody by the raiding officers.

    Two suspects who were transporting 1429 liters of petrol in a refrigerated lorry transporting fish were arrested by the Navy in the Kalpitiya-Daluwa area.

    The arrested suspects told the raiding officers that the petrol stock was being transported from Chillaw to Kalpitiya.

    Two residents of Chillaw-Wella and Mugunuwatawana were arrested along with the petrol.

    According to the navy, the lorry carrying petrol was traveling to Kalpitiya from Chillaw through Udappuwa.

    The stock of petrol was contained in 04 barrels and plastic cans.

    Meanwhile, Puttalam Police officers have arrested 03 suspects who were removing diesel from a fuel bowser in the salt flats on the Puttalam-Mannar road.

    A Bowser vehicle containing 6600 liters of diesel registered at Ceypetco, which was being emptied by the suspects, was also taken into police custody.

    Police arrested these three suspects who are residents of Nochchiyagama, Medawachchiya and Gampaha areas.

    These 05 suspects arrested with the fuel are scheduled to be produced in the Puttalam Magistrate’s Court.

    Meanwhile, the protest started by a group of fishermen in Chillaw city demanding fuel for a lower price went on for the third day as of today.

    The central bank gives 01 month to sell and deposit the foreign currency in hand

    The Central Bank of Sri Lanka has announced a deadline of one month for the people to deposit or sell their current foreign currency.

    The Finance Minister has made this order to attract the foreign currency held by the public to the banking system.

    Accordingly, a general amnesty period of one month has been given from 15.08.2022 to the persons residing or living in Sri Lanka who have foreign currency in their possession.

    21st suspect was arrested for attacking Kokila’s house

    Another suspect involved in attacking the house and office of Member of Parliament Mrs. Kokila Harshani Gunawardena in Loluwagoda and setting fire to the nearby house and vehicles of her brother was arrested by Nalla Police officers yesterday.

    The suspect, who is addicted to drugs, is a resident of Loluwagoda. The police say that this twenty-five-year-old suspect has been lying to the police for the past few days.

    Along with this suspect, 21 people have been arrested in connection with these assaults and arson. A monk was arrested first.
