The Government Medical Officers’ Association says that education is being militarized under the Kotelawala Defense University Act and substandard medical degrees are being awarded.
This will endanger the quality of medical education and ultimately the safety of patients’ lives, said the Secretary of the Government Medical Officers’ Association, Dr. Chenal Fernando.
If the Kotelawala Defense University Act comes into force, a university that will not be subject to the law of the land will be established, he said.
The Secretary of the Government Medical Officers’ Association said that the new Act ignores the regulation of the Sri Lanka Medical Council and that Kotelawala University will become a university that is not subject to regulatory authorities in the fields of engineering, law and administration.
