Samagi Jana Balawegaya Member of Parliament Ajith Mannapperuma has been suspended from participating in parliamentary sessions for a duration of four weeks, effective from today (19). The announcement was made by the Speaker of Parliament, Mr. Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, who cited Mannapperuma’s act of indiscipline as the reason for the suspension.
MP Mannapperuma was banned from Parliament for touching the mace while it was present in the chamber, an act considered a grave violation of parliamentary decorum. Speaker Abeywardena emphasized that it is imperative for all members of Parliament to maintain disciplined conduct in accordance with the standing orders.
During a session of oral questioning in Parliament, the situation escalated to a point where the proceedings had to be adjourned for a period of ten minutes due to the heightened tensions within the chamber.
