Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa today (15) stated that the government is planning to provide Covid immunization vaccines step by step to children over 12 years of age.
Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa made this observation while participating in the opening ceremony of the Southern Province Covid-19 Child Care Unit at the Hambantota Hospital via an online conferrence call from Carlton House, Tangalle.
The Prime Minister also said that priority would be given to children with various complications in vaccinating children.
Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa lighted the traditional coconut oil lamp and inaugurated the Southern Provincial Covid-19 Child Care Unit at the Hambantota Hospital. She then went on an observation tour with the nursing staff, including its doctors.
Covid treatments at Hambantota Hospital were first commenced in March 2020. Since then, about 6,000 patients have been treated.
So far, treatment for children with Covid has been in the women’s ward complex. With the establishment of the new unit, doctors say, it will be possible to pay special attention to children.
The concept of the Pediatric Medical Association is to establish Covid-19 Pediatric Units in every province.
