The Special Task Force (STF) arrested Karupaiya Nirmala, the daughter of a powerful drug dealer named Thelbala, with 50 grams of heroin last night (12).
She was arrested by the STF in the Grandpass area. She is 42 years old. According to information received, searching was done by STF while heroin was being transported for distribution.
The father of this person, Karupaiya Balendran AKA Thelbala is a powerful underworld criminal who is one of the founding links of the drug trade in this country.
He was closely associated with the LTTE and was identified by the CID as an accomplice to the LTTE’s attack on the Kolonnawa fuel depot during the war. When he was about to be arrested, he boarded a boat and fled to India and directed his drug trade from there. He owned about 100 tanks and lived as an aristocrat in the Tuticorin region of southern India.
The Mini Uzi firearm which is used for the security of noblemen was first discovered in Sri Lanka underworld while in the possession of Thelbala.
Thelbala died in 2017 at a hospital in India while undergoing heart surgery.
