The Welikanda Police arrested four military personnel this evening on suspicion of the mysterious death of a person admitted to the treatment and rehabilitation center in Kandakadu.
Thus, two of the army and two of the air force have been arrested.
It is said that the four of them are working as counselors at the rehabilitation center.
The day before yesterday, a very tense situation arose in this rehabilitation center located in Kandakadu with the death of this nurse. More than 600 detainees staying at the rehabilitation center escaped on two occasions. Currently, only 27 detainees are left to be arrested.
The arrested detainees have been remanded after being presented to the court and they have stated to the police that the counselors assaulted the deceased detainee and that his death was caused by that attack.
A senior police officer said that taking those facts into consideration, the four soldiers have been arrested.
This evening, several family members and friends of the deceased detainee identified the deceased as Buddhika Rajapaksha. During the previous identification, the mother and brother did not identify the dead body.
Accordingly, the post-mortem examination regarding this death is scheduled to be held within the next few days. The officer further stated that the cause of death will be ascertained with certainty and accordingly steps will be taken to file charges against the arrested army personnel.
