A digital card for 40 families in every village to buy a ‘relief goods package’

The government has taken steps to provide a digital card to 40 low-income families in each Grama Niladhari Division to enable them to purchase goods worth Rs. 2,000 / -.

These families are selected on the basis of specific criteria and on the recommendation of the relevant Divisional Secretary.

The National Budget Proposals for 2022 provide for the implementation of a comprehensive national program on home economic development.

Under this, the Home Economic Security program (Relief Bag) has been identified as one of such programs.

These measures will be taken to alleviate the pressure of the rising cost of living under this program.

The card will enable the purchase of locally produced essentials and other consumer goods through small supermarkets run by women entrepreneurs operating under the National Program for Home Economic Development.

Accordingly, the Cabinet approved the proposal made by the Minister of Trade to take necessary steps to implement the program.
