    5500 state vehicles in Dilapidated Condition – Others to repair and reuse

    The Cabinet of Ministers has decided to expedite the repair and utilization of vehicles that are not currently in operation among the vehicles owned by government institutions and to dispose of non-repairable vehicles in a systematic manner.

    The proposal was made by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa in his capacity as the Minister of Economic Policy and Plan Implementation.

    At present, there are 89,194 vehicles owned by government agencies including ministries, public enterprises and provincial and local government bodies. Of these, 76,661 vehicles are in running condition and 5533 vehicles are in non-running condition.

    Out of the vehicles that can be driven, there are 33931 vehicles owned by government agencies including ministries, 26395 vehicles owned by state enterprises and 16,335 vehicles owned by Provincial Councils and Local Government Institutions.

    Also, about 8,500 senior officers of government agencies have been given a monthly stipend and approved to use their private cars for official transport facilities.
