    A strong earthquake in Alaska

A magnitude 7.0 earthquake shook Alaska this morning.

The epicenter was reported below the Pacific Ocean floor, however; no tsunami alert was issued.

The quake affected Chignik, Cold Bay, Kodiak and Bethel areas before 4 am local time.

The US Tsunami Warning Center has not issued a tsunami alert.

Two weeks ago, on July 28, a magnitude 8.2 earthquake shook the southwestern coast of Alaska and triggered a tsunami alert. It was the largest earthquake to hit the United States in more than 50 years, but no major damage was reported due to its remoteness.

The largest earthquake to hit the United States was the earthquake of magnitude 9.2 and tsunami on March 27, 1964 in Alaska. The quake lasted more than four minutes and caused tsunami damage to the northern part of California.
