    The deep depression over the Bay of Bengal

    City Weather

    Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-Western and Southern provinces. Fairly heavy showers about 75 mm are likely at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-Western provinces and in Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle and Matara districts.

    Several spells of showers will occur in the Northern and North-Central provinces.

    Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in Uva and Eastern provinces particularly during the afternoon or night.

    Strong winds about (40-45) kmph can be expected at times over western and southern coastal areas and along the western slopes of the central hills.

    General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

    Marine Weather

    The deep depression over the Southwest Bay of Bengal has intensified into the cyclonic storm “Mocha” and lay centered near 11.4°N and 88.0°E at 08.30 a.m. of today (11th May). It is very likely to move north-northwestwards and gradually intensify into a severe cyclonic storm around mid-night of today, the 11th May.Thereafter, it is likely to recurve gradually, move north-northeastwards from 12th May morning and intensify further into a very severe cyclonic storm around 12 th May evening over central Bay of Bengal.

    Naval and multi-day fishing communities are advised not to venture into the sea areas bounded by (03N – 20N) and between (85E – 100E) until further notice.

    Naval and fishing communities are requested to be vigilant while engaging in naval and fishing activities in the sea areas off the coast extending from Galle to Pottuvil via Matara and Hambantota and in the sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Trincomalee via Puttalam, Mannar, Kankasanthurai and Mullaitivu.

    Naval and fishing communitiesare also requested to be attentive to future forecasts issued by the Department of Meteorology in this regard. 

    Condition of Rain:

    Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the sea areas around the island.

    Winds:

    Winds will be south-westerly over sea area around the island and speed will be (30-40) kmph.   Wind speed may increase up to (55-60) kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Galle to Pottuvil via Matara and Hambantota and in the sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Trincomalee via Puttalam, Mannar, Kankasanthurai and Mullaitivu.

    State of Sea:

    The sea areas off the coast extending from Galle to Pottuvil via Matara and Hambantota and sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Trincomalee via Puttalam, Mannar, Kankasanthurai and Mullaitivu will be rough. The other sea areas around the island will be fairly rough.

    Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.
