Reservoirs fill up – Rain will continue today

The Irrigation Department says that due to the rains in the catchment areas, there is currently a high water level in the Attanagalu Oya, Kelani, Nilwala, Kalu and Ging rivers.

Nevertheless, according to the rainfall received so far, there is no risk of any major river reaching a flood situation in the next 24 hours, its Irrigation Director SPC Sugeeshwara said.

The Irrigation Department also said that all the main irrigation reservoirs across the island are currently 67% full.

Meanwhile, the Department of Meteorology says that several spells of showers will occur at times in Western, Sabaragamuwa, North-western and Southern provinces and in the Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in Northern, Eastern and Uva provinces and in Polonnaruwa district during the afternoon or night.

Strong winds about (40-50) kmph can be expected at times over western and Southern coastal areas.

General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
