Sri Lanka’s public sector trade unions have launched a nationwide strike today.
It is requesting the government to amend the new tax policy which has been oppressive to the people.
The strike which started in hospitals across the island has now spread to other government sectors including water supply, electricity, ports, banks, education.
All Ceylon Nurses Association, Water Supply Trade Union Joint Organization, All Ceylon Port service union, Ceylon Bank Employees Association, Government and Semi-Government Trade Unions, Ceylon Teachers Union, and major trade unions are joining the strike.
The National Trade Union Center has warned that it will escalate its action to a nationwide strike on March 15 if the government fails to respond to the union’s demands.
The government has not yet responded to the demands of the trade unions.
