A person has been arrested who cheated Sri Lankans by taking them to Laos on tourist visas while claiming that they would be given jobs in Thailand.
It is from the Foreign Employment Bureau’s Special Investigation Division.
A suspect involved in this racket is a resident of Ambalantota, Nonagama, Welipathanwila, named K. Ruwan Pathirana.
Another person involved fled during the raid.
The Investigation Division of the Bureau said raids are being conducted to arrest him.
Information has also been revealed that the fugitive suspect, Mr. Anura Samaranayake, was a candidate from the National People’s Power for this year’s local government elections.
The main suspect who has been arrested has been remanded until the 20th after being presented to the Hambantota District Magistrate Court.
Also, the court has ordered this suspect to immediately bring the Sri Lankans who are currently stranded in Laos to Sri Lanka.
It is also reported that the investigation officers of the bureau have further uncovered information that the main suspect has defrauded people of about Rs. 1.9 million.
