    It has been 18 years since the tsunami struck

    It has been 18 years since the Tsunami, the worst natural disaster in Sri Lanka in recent history.

    Today (26) is the annual National Safety Day, which commemorates those who lost their lives in the tsunami disaster and talks about disaster prevention.

    Accordingly, a two-minute silence was held from 9.25 am to 9.27 am today to remember those we lost in the tsunami.

    On December 26, 2004, the tsunami caused by the earthquake near Sumatra reached the east coast of Sri Lanka 1 hour and 32 minutes after the earthquake.

    14 coastal districts of Sri Lanka were affected by the tsunami disaster and the number of deaths due to the tsunami disaster was approximately 35,000.

    About 5000 others were disappeared. 502,456 people in 235,145 families in 34 divisional secretariat divisions were affected by the tsunami disaster.

    The social, economic, cultural and environmental damage caused is enormous.

    Every year since 2005, 26th December has been declared as “National Safety Day”.

    On that day, National Safety day was celebrated with the participation of the people as a continuous national remembrance in remembrance of all those who died in the country due to the tsunami disaster and various calamities since then.

    This year on December 26, “National Safety Day” has been organized at the district level all over the island.

    The main commemoration event will be held in front of the Galle “Pareliya Tsunami Memorial” with the participation of political representatives and government officials, including the Minister of State for Defense, the armed forces and the police as well as the community.
