Depression has weakened – Victim count due to heavy rain passed 1000

The depression that has entered the country has weakened into a low-pressure area and it will move towards the west coast of Sri Lanka by the morning of today (26), the Meteorological Department said.

As this system moves away from the island, it is expected that its impact on the island’s weather will lessen from this evening.

Due to this, there will be occasional rain or thundershowers in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-Western and Northern provinces and Galle and Matara districts, and heavy rains of more than 75mm may occur in some places.

The wind blows from time to time across the island. Gusts around (40-50) kmph are possible.

Due to this depression, two people lost their lives in a landslide that occurred yesterday (25) with heavy rains. Three other people were injured.

Over 1,500 people in 3 districts have been affected due to yesterday’s heavy rains.

The Disaster Management Center stated that 1,511 people belonging to 346 families in the districts of Matale, Kandy and Ampara are affected.

The Disaster Management Center stated that 66 houses were partially damaged due to bad weather conditions.
