Rumours about foreign exchange sent by Sri Lankans working abroad being forcibly converted into rupees are entirely false

The Central Bank of Sri Lanka announces that the rumours about the foreign exchange sent to Sri Lanka by Sri Lankans working abroad being forcibly converted into rupees are entirely false.

Also, the central bank emphasizes that it is false to say that taxes have been imposed on their foreign currency.

The Central Bank of Sri Lanka further points out that the incentives currently given to them will continue to be given in the same way.

Below is the statement issued by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.

“Rumours that foreign exchange remittances sent by overseas Sri Lankan employees to Sri Lanka will be taxed or forcibly converted into Sri Lanka Rupees are entirely false.

No tax is charged on foreign remittances, and foreign exchange remittances sent to Sri Lanka by overseas Sri Lankan employees may be kept in their bank accounts in foreign currency or converted into Sri Lanka Rupees at their discretion.

Further, Sri Lankan foreign employees can continue to enjoy the various incentives currently provided in the same manner without any change.”
