The Esala Perahera of the Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Devalaya will be held without devotees

The Perahera Organizing Committee has decided to hold the 2021 Annual Esala Perahera at the historic Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Devalaya this year.

Basnayake Nilame of the Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Devalaya, Dishan Gunasekera stated that the perahera will be conducted without devotees.

Accordingly, the Kataragama Esala Perahera will be held daily from July 10 to July 23, he said.

The Perahera will conclude on July 24 after the “Diya Kepeema Ceremony” in Menik River.

The Kataragama Esala Perahera, one of the oldest peraheras in Sri Lanka, has been held annually since the days of King Dutugemunu to commemorate the wedding of the “Kandakumaru” and the Goddess “Valli”.
