The group of parliamentarians of Samagi Jana Balawega and Samagi Jana Sanandhana met today under the leadership of opposition leader Mr. Sajith Premadasa.
The opposition leader Mr. Sajith Premadasa announced earlier that he will run for the post of successor president and it was unanimously seconded by the group of parliamentarians of Samagi Jana Balawega and Samagi Jana Sandhana.
The adoption of that proposal was reaffirmed today.
Several more discussions are scheduled to be held today with many parties representing the opposition regarding the future work related to that proposal.
The official announcement of the President’s resignation was made today (16) in Parliament.
Parliamentary Secretary General Dhammika Dasanayake mentioned that nominations for electing a new president will be accepted on the morning of the 19th and the election of the president will be done on the 20th.
Why did they wait so long to do this? Why was Ranjan Ramanayake put in prison to begin with, when there are people and politicians, who have committed worse crimes roaming around freely. Is it because the acting Prez thinks that by releasing RR he will get RR’s vote in the Presidential election??
