Police Headquarters to be shifted to Attidiya

Cabinet approval has been granted to construct a new building complex on a 14 acre land belonging to the Police Department in Attidiya and move the Police Headquarters to that location.

A proposal made by Public Security Minister Dr. Sarath Weerasekara yesterday (31) to proceed with the relevant activities, was approved by the Cabinet.

The Police Headquarters is currently located in three buildings which are more than 100 years old between Colombo fort and a building between York Street and Chaitya Road. Due to insufficient space, several offices and divisions are housed in rented buildings. It is said that the monthly rent for some buildings will exceed Rs. 50 lakhs.

In 2012, the Cabinet also approved the construction of a police headquarters in Mirihana. In the background of not taking the necessary steps, the relevant land owned by the police at Bellantota Junction has been identified as more suitable for the construction of the Police Headquarters Complex.
