The number of presidential candidates increases day by day – Still no women on the list

The number of people who are said to be running as candidates for the presidential election which is going to be held in the first week of next October is increasing day by day.

It has already been announced that President Ranil Wickramasinghe will contest the upcoming presidential election and it is said that his presidential election campaign will be implemented as the leader who brought the country back to normal after the struggle.

In addition to this, Mr. Sajith Premadasa, the leader of the Samagi Jana Balawega, and Mr. Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the leader of the Jathika Jana Balawega, will be the front-runners in this year’s presidential election.

Dilith Jayaweera, the leader of Maubima Janatha Party, Roshan Ranasinghe of the National Democratic Front, Janaka Ratnayake, the former chairman of the Sri Lanka Public Utilities Commission, and Ishan Jayawardena, the grandson of President J.R. Jayawardena, have been announced as candidates for the presidential election from among the media.

However, there is an effort to become the presidential candidate for Minister Wijayadasa Rajapakse representing the Sri Lanka Freedom Party and former Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka is also among the names that have come forward.

Mr. Dudley Sirisena, the businessman, had previously shown his readiness for the presidential election, but the situation did not become public when Mr. Dhammika Perera and other businessmen said that they would run for the presidential election.

The decision of the presidential candidate of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna has been assigned to the fifth executive president, Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa, and it is believed that the final decision will be announced on May 1st.

This year’s presidential election, so far no woman has appeared in a major party and recently several women’s organizations have announced that women will also contest the presidential election in the future.

14 candidates appeared in the last 2019 presidential election, and it seems that the number of candidates in this year’s presidential election will be greater than that. However, political commentators say that this situation will change with the official announcement of the presidential election.

As the list of candidates increases, the length of the presidential election ballots will also increase, and simultaneously, the government’s presidential election expenses will also increase.
