Police have taken steps to record statements from several of the 11 maids who have been working at MP Rishad Bathiudeen’s house for some time.
Investigations have revealed that one of the maids had been sexually abused and raped on two occasions by the brother of Rishad Bathiudeen’s wife.
Accordingly, the police also arrested the brother yesterday. He is currently being held for 72 hours and is being investigated, police said.
Investigations have revealed that the suspect had planned to sexually assault two other maids.
The police have identified the maids and obtained statements, while several other maids are to be identified and statements are to be obtained from them, police said.
The MP’s wife, uncle, and brokers connected with the investigation into the burning death of a 16-year-old girl at Rishard’s house were arrested for trafficking and cruelty.
The three and the MP’s four cousins have been remanded in custody for 72 hours after being produced in court today.
Officers from the Borella Police, the Colombo South Divisional Crime Investigation Unit and the Colombo South Children and Women’s Unit are conducting investigations and the suspects are due to be produced in court next Monday.
