Former President Maithripala Sirisena has resigned from the position of Chairman of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party.
He informed this at the party’s executive council meeting held today.
Due to the victory of the 2015 presidential election, the former president of the party, former president Mahinda Rajapaksa, handed over the chairmanship of the Sri Lankan National Party to Mr. Maithripala Sirisena.
Mr. Maithripala Sirisena, who has been the chairman since then, is also facing an interim injunction extended twice by the court suspending him from holding the position of chairman in view of the crisis situation that emerged in the party recently.
Accordingly, Justice Minister Wijayadasa Rajapaksa has been appointed to the vacant chairmanship.
