Minister of State Prof. Channa Jayasumana says that another new genus of Kovid called ‘Epsilon’ is spreading in many countries and Sri Lanka is also paying attention to it.
He said it was found in the state of California in the United States.
The Minister of State emphasized that the Delta strain of the Kovid-19 virus is currently the leading threat in the world and is likely to spread in Sri Lanka in the future as well.
This was stated by the Minister of State Prof. Channa Jayasumana while addressing the media in Anuradhapura.
“The Delta variety is becoming the dominant variety all over the world. I do not think only Sri Lanka will be able to get rid of it. Therefore, we should hope that in the future the Delta variety will become more prevalent in our country. However, scientists have shown that all the vaccines we currently offer, such as Cyanoform, AstraZeneca, Modernna and Pfizer as well as Sputnik vaccine has a special cover for the Delta variety.
People who receive the vaccine are less likely to be affected by the Delta strain, even if they have an infection. Therefore, vaccination is very important. We also know that the Lambda variety, which originated in Peru, South America, is spreading in many countries. Another genus, Epsilon, which originated in the state of California in the United States, is now spreading to a number of countries. We are keeping an eye on all this.”
