Will the COPE chairman resign or not?

“Is Mr. Rohitha Abeygunawardena, who was appointed as the new chairman of the Parliament’s Committee on Public Enterprises or COPE Committee, resigning from that position? Otherwise, what action will be taken against him?”, the opposition asked in the parliament today.

A group of MPs left yesterday objecting to the appointment of the new chairman.

Also, Mr. Wasantha Yapa Bandara, who was announced as a new member today, rejected membership in the COPE Committee.

Member of Parliament Nalin Bandara asked here whether Mr. Rohitha Abeygunawardena will be given the opportunity to resign and appoint a new member or whether a decision will be taken regarding that position.

However, since there was no clear answer to this, MP Nalin Bandara said, “When asked, they say yes, but no answer is given. Coming tomorrow morning and protesting seems to be the option.”

The Minister of Electricity, Kanchana Wijesekera, who stood up, requested the Deputy Speaker Mr. Ajith Rajapaksa, that the time has passed for the additional issues raised unnecessarily and to take steps to proceed according to the agenda.
