Minister of State for Higher Education Mr. Suren Raghavan says that a decision will be taken this week regarding the allowances of non-academic employees of universities.
The minister said that it is currently estimated that 1.3 billion rupees will be spent annually to provide stipends to non-academic employees of universities.
In the meantime, the strike started by non-academic employees of universities continues today.
They said that the government did not give a positive response to their demands.
Accordingly, the strike of non-academic employees of universities will be implemented for the 15th day today.
Dhammika S Priyantha, Co-Chairman of the Joint Committee of University Trade Unions, said that the strike has been intensified since yesterday.
They started this strike protesting against the 15% cut in salary of non-academic employees and for non-increment in monthly allowances of non-academic employees.
Meanwhile, the Rajarata University General Students’ Union decided yesterday to express their support for the strike of non-academic employees of universities.
Yesterday, the Inter-University Student Council has requested the University Grants Commission to solve the problem of non-academic employees of the universities as soon as possible.
