“Public service has expanded. The economy has contracted. We have made a mistake somewhere.”

As the public service expands, the country’s economy should also be strong, but the country’s public service has expanded and the economy has shrunk, says President’s Counsel, Minister of Justice, Prison Affairs and Constitutional Reforms Dr. Wijayadasa Rajapaksa.

“In terms of public service, we were at a good level three or four decades ago. But today we are not in a happy place. We have made a mistake somewhere. Our public service is very broad. There are 100,000 government employees. In that case, the more the public service expands, the stronger the country’s economy should be. That has not happened. In the developed countries of the world, three percent of the population of that country work in the government service, while ours has 7 or 7.5 percent. In that state expenditure has increased. We cannot be satisfied with data on productivity.” The minister said here.

A special workshop on the efficient and effective execution of the justice process as well as the improvement of peace and reconciliation, and the work of the Ministry of Justice, Prison Affairs and Constitutional Reform in a more pro-people manner, was held yesterday (13) at Bandaranayake International Conference Hall, Colombo under the chairmanship of Dr. Vijayadasa Rajapaksa. Speaking there, the minister said these.

    1. Tell the Minister himself to ask from his previous and current leadership as to who is responsible for expanding the public service? The answer itself in his speech. Port Authority,Transport Ministry, Health services, Public administration, and the Provincial Council are the main stakeholders and disasters for the country!

    2. All these politicians have perfected the art of talking tongue in cheek. While they are all the culprits, they talk as if they are new comers and discoverers the evil
