    5 post office safes were broken in the last two months

    In the past two months, 05 post offices were robbed and more than 41 lakhs of rupees were stolen.

    All these thefts took place during long weekend holidays.

    The nearest theft is reported from Alavwa Head Post Office. During the long weekend holiday that started with Vesak day, the post office was broken into from the roof and stolen. The police say that two safes were pierced with a grinder, and a sum of Rs. 361,198 and a stock of stamps worth Rs. 400,800 were stolen.

    The Galgamuwa main post office was also robbed on the last weekend of last April. Rs. 1.6 million of money had been stolen there. The theft was done by opening the locks of the safe.

    Apart from that, every other post office had been looted by breaking safes.

    The main post office at Warakapola was also robbed in the third week of April. The safe was cut open and Rs. 170,300 in cash and Rs. 876,500 worth of stamps were stolen.

    The Kelaniya main post office was also robbed by thieves between 01st and 03rd April. They broke into the post office from roof, cut the safe and stole Rs. 643,885 from it.

    On March 04, the Mahabage post office was also robbed in the same way. Rs. 70,000 rupees had been stolen from its safe. Thieves entered the post office by breaking through the wall.

    Apart from the theft of the Galgamuwa post office, all other post offices can be suspected to be the work of the same person or group. All those thefts have been done in the same way by following the same method.
