Four youths who went to bathe in Ellawala falls in Wellawaya drowned and went missing today.
The police say that 4 out of a group of 10 youths who came from Kalmunai and Saindamarudu on a picnic drowned and went missing while swimming in the waterfall. They are between twenty-two and twenty-three years of age.
The police say that a significant number of lives have been lost in this waterfall, which is a place that is most visited by tourists.
On March 03, 2022, the Wellawaya Divisional Secretary made the area where this waterfall is located a prohibited zone for tourists. That is because 09 people have drowned in this waterfall within 05 months.
The falls was reopened for tourists again on September 6, 2022.
