Nationwide transportation of beef and mutton is allowed again

The President’s Media Unit announces that the ban imposed on the transportation of beef and mutton in the Northern Province has been lifted and the transportation of those types of meat has been allowed throughout the island.

The Department of Animal Production and Health stated that the cold weather, which caused the death of cattle due to shock in the Northern and Eastern Provinces on days like the 8th and 9th has now subsided.

Laboratory tests confirmed that the deaths of these animals were not due to any epidemic.

As more than 1600 cows and goats had died in those provinces due to this incident, the President ordered to immediately stop the transportation of mutton and beef between districts nationwide for the sake of public safety.

Later, measures were also taken to close slaughterhouses and butcher shops (except for chicken) for a week.

Steps were recently taken to allow the flow of beef and mutton in other provinces after the laboratory test results came.

Currently, slaughterhouses and butchers in the Eastern Province are operating as usual.
