    61 Sri Lankans arrested for illegally trying to enter Canada from boats

    Tamil Nadu and Karnataka police have arrested 11 human traffickers and 61 Sri Lankans who were staying in India for trying to enter Canada illegally.

    The security forces say that they have been arrested for staying in the country illegally.

    Thirty-eight Sri Lankans have been arrested from Mangalore in Karnataka and 23 from Madurai in Tamil Nadu.

    According to the Karnataka Police, Sri Lankans entered India by sea in March. After staying in Madurai for a while, some of them went to Bengaluru and later to Mangalore.

    According to the Tamil Nadu Police, the arrests were made by the Mangalore City Police Commissioner.

    We have also arrested seven Indians who helped these Sri Lankans. All the accused have been charged under the relevant sections.

    Tamil Nadu police have not yet revealed the full details of those arrested.

    According to information received by the Karnataka Police, Sri Lankans have paid LKR 1 million to take them to Canada. The group was scheduled to depart from Tamil Nadu in container vessels, cargo ships or private boats.

    “They were staying in lodges in Tamil Nadu and some of them were shifted to Shantinagar in Bengaluru after police raids intensified during the state elections. Later they divided into small groups and came to Mangalore. Our branch police have secured them and their remand is being prosecuted, ”said a senior Karnataka intelligence official.
