Maligawatta Bodhirajaramaya’s chief priest Uwathanne Sumana Thero was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department and remanded until the 14th after he was presented before Colombo Additional Magistrate Manjula Ratnayake in connection with a fraud involving the purchase of Rs. 60 million worth of coconut oil and the issuing of false cheques while appearing as a manager of a company.
According to a complaint made by a manager of a private company located in Dematagoda reported to the Financial and Commercial Crime Investigation Division of the Criminal Investigation Department, investigations were conducted, and he was arrested this afternoon.
The Criminal Investigation Department informed the court that while appearing as a director of a private company of the same name this thero had obtained 84,240 kilos of coconut oil worth Rs. 58,800,000 last July and issued eight cheques for it, but later those cheques became invalid and he cheated without paying for the purchase.
