National Hospital rejected Dr. Anil Abeywickrama, the specialist who performed the 1st heart transplant and opened the doors to Indian doctors

According to hospital sources, the services of Dr. Anil Abeywickrama, a heart and thoracic surgeon who has experience in the first transplant have been refused for the second heart transplant operation in the country, which is being conducted at the Colombo National Hospital.

The news also mentioned that when specialist Dr. Anil Abeywickrama, was present for this second operation, which is being held for a doctor who needed a heart transplant surgery, a medical team at the Colombo National Hospital refused his presentation.

However, according to sources from the Colombo National Hospital, the same medical team that refused to join Mr. Anil Abeywickrama for this operation has expressed their wish for Indian doctors to join it. Accordingly, it is said that Indian doctors have also come to Sri Lanka for this second heart surgery.

Sri Lanka’s first heart transplant took place on July 07, 2017, at the Kandy Hospital. Under the leadership of heart and thoracic surgeon Dr. Anil Abeywickrama, the medical and nursing staff of the Kandy Hospital dedicated themselves to this. The person who received the heart transplant is still alive today.

In spite of this, a doctor who commented to NewsWave said that it is surprising that the services of a doctor with a lot of experience in this country were not obtained for this kind of heart transplant surgery which is done for a doctor.

A brain-dead person was airlifted from Badulla General Hospital to Colombo National Hospital today (31) with the intervention of the Sri Lanka Air Force to obtain the necessary organs related to this operation.
