    More than half of the people do not support the resolution adopted regarding Sri Lanka

    The Sri Lankan government has rejected the new resolution adopted regarding today Sri Lanka at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland.

    The resolution A/HRC/51/L.1 (Rev.1) entitled ‘Promotion of Reconciliation, Accountability and Human Rights in Sri Lanka’ was presented without consultation or agreement with Sri Lanka by the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, Malawi, Montenegro, North Macedonia and the United States.

    Supporting Sri Lanka’s position against the resolution, Pakistan’s delegation called for a vote.

    Representatives of Pakistan, Brazil, China, Venezuela, Japan and the Republic of Korea made statements in support of Sri Lanka before voting.

    Today (06) at the Geneva Human Rights Council, 20 votes were cast in favour of this resolution.

    07 countries namely Bolivia, China, Cuba, Eritrea, Pakistan, Uzbekistan and Venezuela voted against the resolution.

    20 countries including India, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nepal, Qatar, United Arab Emirates and Brazil abstained from voting.

    More than half of all Council members did not support the resolution, with 20 countries abstaining.

    Foreign Minister Sabri, who represented Sri Lanka in the Council, objected to the points mentioned in the resolution as they were matters outside the framework of the Council, such as domestic economic and financial policies.

    The Human Rights Council consists of 47 member states. It includes 13 African states, 13 Asia Pacific states, 8 Latin American and Caribbean states, 7 Western Europe and other states, and 6 Eastern European states.

    The 51st session of the UN Human Rights Council, which is currently ongoing, started on September 12. It will be held in Geneva, Switzerland till October 7th.

    1. IT is obvious that the minister has failed to perform his duty towards the people of Sri Lanka.
      The attitude of the total government & cabinet has to change if we are to achieve success
